The Art and Science of Alternative Dispute Resolution

When you think of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), think about the symptoms: anxiety, stress depression, communication, finances, taxes behavior, problems with business or personal relationships; OR you can think about the outcome: clarity, peace, satisfaction, fulfillment, transition, and security.

When successful people consult financial advisors, personal trainers, nutritionists, interior designers, tax consultants, etc., we regard it as indicative of good judgment, not weakness. Doesn’t it make sense to consult a professional about something as important as your business, professional, or personal relationships?

Generally, the clients who I see in my offices are business and professional people who are doing well in most aspects of their business, personal, and professional affairs. Some come for assistance working through a particular crisis—death (end of life issues, probate), divorce, ending relationships (business and personal) which have different settlement problems or issues, creditor issues, lawsuits, preventing potential problems, etc. Others have found that they are “stuck” in their personal or professional growth, finding themselves in the same counter-productive cycles, but unable to come up with a new approach, not knowing what to do to progress to the next stage.

My clients expect excellence and richness from their ADR experiences, and are unwilling to settle for less. When my clients want more from their business and professional relationships; or want to do better with these relationships; or when something becomes problematic, rather than waste time, they consult an expert.

The experienced ADR professional not only works on a neutral basis with all the parties, but also teaches people how to get the most from the ADR experience. With my broadly based background, I access a varied repertoire of ADR styles from which to assist in crafting a “therapeutic” approach uniquely tailored to help each persons (parties) personality styles grow and thrive.

Through many years of experience and training, I have developed a method for teaching skills which circumvent the “stumbling around in the dark” experience so common in ADR processes. You will learn to differentiate between talking with a friend or business associate and talking in an ADR session. My particular methods will teach you to “stay on track” by drawing from your existing knowledge and experiences. These easily-learned skills help you identify specific areas of concern and sensitivity which become your guideposts and direct you in your dealings.

From our life experiences, each of us develops a personality style uniquely our own. Your ADR process must be skillfully tailored to fit your personality style—simply because what is helpful to one person may be a stumbling block for another. My broadly-based background, firmly anchored in time-honored Christian thought, provides a vast repertoire of ADR styles from which to draw. A meticulously crafted fit between personality and ADR dramatically expedites the ADR process. Gone are the “cookie cutter,” “one-size-fits-all,” disease-model approaches of the less refined ADR processes currently in use by many.

The practice of Alternative Dispute Resolution is as much art as science. I offer a greatly refined sensitivity to the client’s thoughts and feelings along with an exquisite ability to work in a neutral role. These skills, developed over years, allow me to work with each client much as an accomplished accompanist works with a singer—intimately attuned to the singer’s artistic desires, helping the melody soar, never taking over the song—making more beautiful music.

Now, really, since it is your life, will just any Alternative Dispute Resolution professional do?
